RESOLUTION

Recognizing April 14, 2007 as the National Day of Climate Action

WHEREAS, From melting glaciers to erratic weather patterns global warming is impacting the nation; and

WHEREAS, Step it Up 2007 is a nationwide campaign comprised of over 1300 events in 50 states rallying around the need for substantial and rapid action on the issue of global warming; and

WHEREAS, rallies across the country are being organized by groups and individuals who are committed to taking bold steps to combat global warming; and

WHEREAS, this campaign is anticipated to have the largest protest the country has ever seen based on the numbers and the extent of protecting our environment for future generations; and

WHEREAS, the gatherings for many of the campaigns are at unique locations like: the levees in New Orleans, the melting glaciers of Mt. Rainier, the endangered coral reef off Key West, and Philadelphia’s very own Independence Mall which are all locations that will bring knowledge and understanding of the issues; and

WHEREAS, the droughts and stronger storms combined with rising sea levels caused by global warming dramatically affect the already scarce resources relied upon by millions of people for the basic essential of life; and

WHEREAS, constituents are demanding that elected officials get on the path towards reducing carbon emissions before environmental consequences occur in America; and

WHEREAS, Many speakers and environmentalists will be in attendance in addition to Philadelphia mayoral candidates to further enhance the awareness and literacy that the campaign exudes; and

WHEREAS, Step it Up Philadelphia will take place Saturday, April 14, 2007 gathering at Independence Mall at noon to announce Philadelphia’s call for action on global warming; now therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA, That we hereby recognize April 14, 2007 as the National Day of Climate Action in Philadelphia..

FURTHER RESOLVED, That an Engrossed copy of this resolution be presented to representatives of the Step it Up Campaign 2007 for their hard work and efforts to combat global warming, as evidence of the sincere sentiments of this legislative
