Minors to Adhere to Summer Curfew Hours

In May 2006, the Honorable Blondell Reynolds Brown introduced legislation in City Council to strengthen the curfew law for minors ages 13 and under. Reynolds Brown and co-sponsors of the bill (Councilmember’s Clarke, DiCicco, Kenney, & Reed-Miller) acknowledge the rise of violence among youth, which has had a traumatic effect on our communities. The Mayor is proposing the establishment of Youth Curfew Centers in several troubled areas aroundthe City under the alarming use of crime.

Councilwoman Reynolds Brown understands the benefits in stricter enforcement of the curfew law especially in troubled communities. “There needs to be a safe haven, where children know they are safe. No parent/guardian should have to worry about crime. Their worries should be focused on where and how their children use their time. It is the City’s responsibility to worry about crime. There is no better time than the present for curfew laws to be re-evaluated and enforced. None o this matters without enforcement.” The Curfew legislation aides Mayor Street’s Safer Streets Program, and reaffirm programs already in place like the Adolescent Violence Prevention Program.
